Early life

Tyrone Curtis is Muggsy Bogues’s real name, was born on January January 9, 1965, and was the youngest of 4 children.

He grew up in the Lafayette Court housing projects, where he experienced a less-than-stellar childhood.

His father was of the average height measuring 5 ft 5 in and his mother was of a short height measuring 4 ft 11 in. Bogues grew up with three older siblings.

Bogues had a very traumatic childhood wherein at the age of 5, he was hospitalized after being struck by stray buckshot on the street.

At 12, his father had committed armed robbery and was sentenced to twenty years in prison. His brother, Chuckie, had also begun using hard drugs around this time.

He played basketball at Dunbar High School, Baltimore. He got training by the head coach at Maryland University.  During his college life, he used

to play with the future NBA players Reggie Williams, Reggie Lewis, and David Wingate, who studied in the same university.

Muggsy Bogues’ childhood is so tragic. He spent his early years with gunfire and drugs.  His father who was a dockworker was arrested for an

armed robbery and was imprisoned for 20 years. His mother, a housewife, together with his elder brother was the one who supported and

encouraged him to pursue his dream in sports, especially basketball.

He signed a sports contract of $1 million for four years after he got selected at the twelfth position in the initial round of the NBA. From that

money, he bought a Mercedes car, hired a lawyer for his father, and was released from prison. Also, he constructed a house for his mother.  His

ability to handle a ball made him so popular.

In 1991, he got married to a lady named Kim whom he met at a Dunbar High School alumni game.

During his college years, Tyrone would go on to receive multiple scholarship offers for college basketball, with various schools such as Virginia,

Seton Hall, and Penn State display interest. He chose to attend Wake Forest University, where he played for 4 years. In 1986-1987, Bogues

received the Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award and led the Atlantic Coast Conference in steals and assists

 After leaving the NBA, Bogues went into real estate until 2005 when he became the head coach of the Charlotte Sting in the Women’s National

Basketball Association. He became the head coach of the United Faith Christian Academy boys’ high school basketball team in 2011 but stepped

down in 2014 to pursue other avenues.

Bogues also have so many firm appearances like “Space Jam” along with other famous NBA players and appeared on various shows such as

“Curb your Enthusiasm,” “Saturday Night Live,” and “Eddie.” He was an inductee to the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in January 2020.
